herne the hunter 1: white death – john j mclaglen

Herne’s character’s not as mean as could be, and that was the first thing I noticed. He’s not as interesting because of it. Plotwise, he’s an ex-gunslinger turned husband who trots off into the countryside and leaves his pretty young wife alone in their little cabin beside the railroad. He’s a bit shocked to find a bunch of men have ridden up and raped his wife – in some rather graphic and mindfuzzing ways as she recounts to her husband the sordid details of her ordeal which sound more like the back of a porn film and while makes you wince, didn’t quite have the same impact if she’d just stayed silent. Anyway, Herne’s neighbour (and psycho wannabe) also loses a wife and rides off into the rising sun with Herne to deal some good old fashioned vengeance on the dudes responsible.
